When my husband and I were newly married we decided to adopt a dog from our local shelter. “Dixie” was a full bred, full grown beagle who had been mistreated by her previous owner before being left at the animal shelter. She came to us already spayed, already housebroken, and became completely dedicated to us….I often thought as a way of saying “thanks” for rescuing her from her previous owners. Dixie was our first baby and happily adapted when our “real” babies came along. From that experience, I now believe the best way to add a pet to your family is to rescue a pet who needs a home from your local shelter.
Iams believes that too, and Academy Award winning actress Hilary Swank has teamed up with them to help find homes for 1.5 million pets by January 4, 2010. With nearly 8 million homeless animals in the U.S. today, and almost half scheduled to be euthanized this year alone, our help is needed now more than ever. Did you know:
To date, the Iams Home for the Holidays campaign has helped 808,147 pets find loving homes. The campaign ends January 4th.
Can’t adopt right now? You can still support a good cause on the IH4TH site by casting a vote for your favorite shelter to receive free Iams food, learn ways to get involved, and maybe even help volunteer at your local shelter! Find a way to get involved! Your furry friends will thank you for it!
I adopted a pet awhile back myself, and I would do it again in a minute. I hate seeing stray animlas out of the streets, eating out of dumpsters, and especially in the bitter cold weather. This is inhumane to do this to pets. get your gets spayed or neutered so this world doesn’t have too many unwanted animals roaming the streets.
