Have You been Caught by a Traffic Camera?

I might be in the minority, but I actually enjoy my commute home from work.  It gives me a chance to unwind, listen to some music and reflect on the day’s activities.  Suffice it to say that I am generally in my own world on my 20 minute ride home.  When out of nowhere, I see a huge FLASH in my rear view mirror, and I am snapped back to reality.

I know very well that there are two school zones on my way home and the school warning signs are clearly visible.  I am generally vigilant to heed all road warning signs but this time, I have a very good excuse.

School is out.

Why on Earth are the traffic cameras still snapping pictures as I pass in front of a school that is CLOSED for the Summer?  Yes, I saw the school signs and yes, I was going over 20 miles an hour (but under the normal speed limit).  Bu there were no buses, no teachers, no flashing lights and above all…NO STUDENTS.

Do I have a good case for appeal if the ticket actually shows up in my mailbox?  Have you ever successfully appealed a traffic camera ticket?  Is it worth the hassle?

  1. I work at a court and I believe you have good reason to go to court if you get ticketed in a school zone when no school is in session! Now, I’m not an attorney, so maybe I’m wrong. Our city tried to do traffic cameras, but the public was so angry about it and there were concerns about where the school zone actually starts…and the company supplying the cameras went out of business. So, we don’t have to worry about it in our town…for now.

  2. If you get a ticket go for it. I think you will win. I have beaten a speeding ticket before and the judge announced to the court that I had to prove 49% and the court had to prove 51% and when I was done talking to the judge I looked him square in the face and said I think I proved at least 70% that I was innocent and you said I only had to prove 49% . I could tell I had him. He didn’t want to but he said I won case dismissed 🙂 It not only saved me $200 but it was the point of the whole thing cause I really was innocent. Good Luck 🙂

  3. Schools may be closed to students but there are things that still go on. There are folks that work on keeping up the grounds and school improvements over the summer. Then there is summer school in some schools. Then you also have to take into consideration that some kids do play on school grounds. My sons school has a playground and the kids do play there over the summer. So technically, even when schools are out for the summer, things still do happen on school grounds. As for the ticket in a school zone, I actually received 4 in a 2 month span because I didn’t realize the camera’s where even there. Bummer, but I paid them.
